Summer Essentials

Summer is in full swing in the northern hemisphere, here are a few of my summer “essential” essential oils.

  • Peppermint VitalityGrapefruit, lemon, tangerine and orange
  • Lavender
  • Purification
  • Tangerine Vitality
  • Grapefruit Vitality
  • Lemon Vitality
  • Melrose
  • LavaDerm Cooling mist

Make a Refreshing water to drink :

1 drop Tangerine Vitality
1 drop Lemon Vitality
1 drop Grapefruit Vitality
(Can also add a drop of peppermint vitality, but it can be a little bitter)
1 litre (1 Quart) of water in a glass jug or bottle.

(I sometimes swap the citrus oils I use depending on my mood, orange or lime are also yummy).

Add the oils to the water and then make sure you stir or shake as the essential oil sits on the top of the jug, and the first glass poured will have more oils in it that the next, especially if its not mixed well.
I often refill the jug with water and reuse before adding my essential oil, as the oil tends to stick to the edge of the glass and is enough for a refill.

Cooling yourself down in the summer:

I love Peppermint as its so cooling and refreshing and its one I use a lot in the summer to cool, me down.
When exercising I rub a drop on the back of my neck to cool my body down. (It makes it feel like the temperature around me has dropped a few degrees.) See my post Cooling for for summer

Sunburn:
If I get too much exposure to the sun then I reach for my trusty Lavender essential oil, or Lavaderm cooling mist (see my post Essential oils for sunburn for detailed information.)

I just apply a few drops of Lavender  or a spray of Lavaderm to the burn. I find this takes the heat and stinging/itching out of it,  and then when it starts stinging or itching again I just reapply. Depending on the severity of the burn depends on the length of time I use the oil or the spray.

Bug repellant and bites:

Purification is my go to oil to use as both an insect repellant and to reduce the stinging, itchiness and or swelling associated with a bug bite.
(I do have a some insect repellant recipes  on this post if you want to learn more).

I either add some Purification to water in a glass spray bottle (40-50 drops of Purification to 250ml or 8oz  glass bottle) and then shake well and spritz myself all over. I do need to repeat this through the day.

Or I make a puddle of carrier oil (almond oil, V-6, olive oil etc) in my hand and add a 2-4  drops of purification to some carrier oil and rub it over myself.

Disinfecting cuts and scrapes:

I use either Purification or Melrose to disinfect any cuts or scrapes.

I either add a drop of the oil straight on the skin (with no carrier), or dilute it 50/50 if it is a child under the age of 12 or a very painful cut. See my post on essential oils for wound healing for a more detailed explanation.
