Making your own Bug Spray/ Insect repellent

Palo SantoPlants naturally excrete essential oils to offer protection from bugs in their own environment. The great thing for us is that essential oils offer the human body the same protection!

I have found that some oils work better with different bugs. I guess because different plants grow in certain climates, they have tailored themselves to deal with specific bugs. So its important to play with the recipes and find out what works best for you and your environment.

Essential oils known for their insect repellant properties:

Idaho Tansy, Palo Santo, Peppermint,  Cedarwood, Melaleuca Alternifolia (a variety of tea tree ), Dorado Azule, Geranium, Lemon, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Thyme, Spearmint, Citronella, Xiang Mao (red lemongrass, a new e.o from Taiwan)

Young Living Blends: Purification and Melrose

I encourage you to have some fun making your own blends and seeing what works best for you! 🙂

Here are a few recipes that you can make up yourself:

Basic Insect repellent recipe 1:

6 drops of Idaho Tansy
6 drops of Palo Santo

Mix with water 2 oz (60 mls) of water in a glass spray bottle and and apply to skin as needed.

General repellent:

  • 6 drops of peppermint
  • 6 drops of melaleuca alternifolia
  • 9 drops of citronella (Purification blend makes a great substitute for Citronella)
  • Dilute with water 20:80 and apply to exposed skin as needed.
  • Avoid eyes.

Mosquito repellent:

I make this into a 250 ml or 8oz  glass spray bottle. (For a 4 oz bottle half the recipe)
1 tsp of Himalayan crystal salt

  • 8 drops Palo santo oil
  • 7 drops Peppermint oil
  • 7 drops eucalyptus radiata oil (or Melaleuca alternifolia or Melrose blend)
  • 7 drops lemongrass (or Xiang Mao essential oil)
  • 11 drops citronella (or Purification blend)
  • 5 drops Idaho tansy (can omit and increase the drops of palo santo)
  • 5 drops lavender
  1. Add sat to the bottle.
  2. Then drop in the essential oils
  3. Fill the bottle with water.

Make sure you shake well before use and apply to exposed skin as needed

Avoid spraying near eyes.
