Essential Oil Safety – Rule 2
Essential oil Safety Rule 2 – Using photosensitive essential oils. (For the first rule- Essential oil Safety Rule 1)
Any citrus essential oil, when applied to the skin and exposed to light, will make the skin sensitive to damage from UV rays. This means that you get this chocolate brown patch (of damaged tissue) on the skin where the essential oil was applied and you have to wait up to 3 months for that patch of skin to “grow out”.
Photosensitive essential oils are citrus oils like: lemon, orange, tangerine, lime, grapefruit, bergamot, yuzu etc…)
You need to wait 24-48 hours after applying the oil to expose that skin to the sun. So its easier to just apply the oil “where the sun don’t shine.” Like under your clothing line, in your hair, under your feet, behind your ears (if you have long hair) etc… areas protected from the sun. This applies for any essential oil blend that also contains a citrus essential oil.
Citrus essential oils are classed as an “expressed” essential oil. They are not distilled, rather they are pressed from the rind. (You really do get essential oil on your hand when you peal an orange). Citrus essential oils have a shorter shelf life, and can expire after few years, (you can store them in the refrigerator to extend their shelf life), so make sure you smell any old bottles you have before using them to ensure that they are not rancid.
