Clearing Sinuses with Essential Oils

Peppermint 1Blocked sinuses are no fun.

My favourite essential oil, and the one oil that my husband actually seeks out to use by himself, is Peppermint oil.

Clearing your sinuses with peppermint is very simple and fast acting.

I take my bottle of Young Living Peppermint essential oil and bring it to one nostril and cover the other and inhale, then move it to the other nostril and cover the opposite one and inhale, then blow my nose.

If that doesn’t work then I can take it further and put a drop on my tongue:

  1. Drop 1 drop of peppermint oil on the back of my hand.
(If you are new to using essential oils then be warned the peppermint has quite a bitter taste (even though it smells so sweet).  I let the drop roll on my hand and then lick just a small amount, that way I can slowly get used to the strong taste of peppermint. )
  2. Push my tongue to the roof of my mouth
  3. Breathe through my nose.

I generally have to repeat this several times through out the day with heavy sinus congestion.

*** Peppermint is to be avoided for children under the age of 3 ***

For the visual learner here is a video of me using the peppermint oil.

Other oils I like to use for clearing blocked sinus:

Single oils: Rosemary, Melaleuca alternifolia, eucalyptus radiata, blue cypress, dorado azule, ravintsara, eucalyptus blue,
Young Living Blends: Raven, Thieves, R.C and Breath again roll on.

Apply a 5-8 drops of any of these oils to a diffuser and diffuse several times during and day and over night.
Apply a few drops to your hand, rub your hands together and and then cup then over nose and inhale throughout the day. I then rub the oil residue on the back of my neck and shoulders.
*** Make sure you avoid the essential oil from coming into contact with your face or in your eyes. If an essential oil gets anywhere I don’t want it to and becomes uncomfortable, or has a  burning or stinging sensation then I dilute it with carrier oil like Young Living V6  carrier oil or I use almond, coconut or olive oil.  Water will make it sing worse so make sure you dilute it with a carrier oil. *****

A great saline solution for clearing sinuses as recommended by Daniel Pénoël, MD

Nasal Irrigation Recipe:

  • 10 drops Rosemary
  • 6 drops Melaleuca alternifolia
  • 8 tbsp very fine salt (salt flower)

Mix the essential oils into the fine salt and keep in a sealed container.
For each nasal irrigation session combine:

  • 1 tsp of the salt and oils mix and dissolve it into
  • 1 ½ cups distilled tepid water,

Put into a nettie pot or nasal irrigator and irrigate the nasal cavities while leaning over a sink. Blow the nose periodically to clear sinus cavities.

I have another post on using essential oils Sinus infection that talks about using the nasal irrigation. Click here
